13th-Century gravestone to go on show at the McManus
ByThe Courier Reporter
One of a group of 13th-Century stones that are being scanned and photographed is to go on display at the McManus.
The eight gravestones were found during the 19th-Century renovations of the East Church in the City Churches complex but are thought to be associated with a much older building.
They have spent generations in storage, but last month, thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery, a team of archaeologists started to record and scan them with a digital laser scanner.
Workshops have been held to teach archaeological drawing and recording and the public were asked to vote for which stone they want to see permanently displayed at the McManus.
After weeks of voting the “Lady’s Head stone” has been selected. Curator of early history Christina Donald said: “It received 79 votes out of a total of 150. It will be going into the McManus in the spring.”
