Work on £2m Gleneagles rail station link road to begin

Work on the link road to Gleneagles Station is expected to begin on November 11.
Work on the link road to Gleneagles Station is expected to begin on November 11.

Work will begin next week on major roads infrastructure costing more than £2 million in Perthshire as part of the legacy from the Ryder Cup, The Courier can reveal.

It’s been announced that Northern Ireland-based Whitemountain Quarries Ltd has been awarded the contract for the new Gleneagles railway station link road as part of preparations for the global golf tournament, which will bring a huge economic boost to the area.

The transport scheme is aimed at improving road safety and access to the station by providing a new road and closing off the current A9 Perth to Stirling dual carriageway access.

Work is expected to start on the new link road on November 11 and be completed by June 2014. The existing access road between the station and the A9 will close once the new link road is opened.

The contract is worth £2,262,396.

A Perth and Kinross Council spokeswoman confirmed the construction of a new link road from the A9/A823 Loaninghead roundabout is to serve Gleneagles railway station, thereby replacing the existing access road and junction with the A9 trunk road.

“The works will include site clearance and remediation, earthworks, extension of the existing car park, the provision of utilities and sustainable urban drainage system, diversion of utilities and formation of new junctions,” she said.

“Improvements to the southbound A9 diverge slip road will include carriageway widening/realignment of existing diverge slip road and enlargement of the existing Loaninghead junction roundabout and the removal of a disused footbridge at Gleneagles Station.”
