Lichties reach lofty heights as former EastEnders actor returns to Arbroath FC

BT Sport are to film at Arbroath's Gayfield home.

A global spotlight will be shone on one of Tayside’s football grounds as part of a European sports programme.

BT Sport will film at Gayfield in Arbroath this weekend as the broadcaster casts a light on the “outposts” of European football.

The sports documentary is following Arsenal fan and former EastEnders actor Tom Watt on a trip to some of the continent’s most outlying stadiums as he attempts to discover what goes in to supporting and running teams in the most far-flung reaches of Europe.

The show follows on from a similar programme, also hosted by Watt, which featured Gayfield, too.

Watt will revisit the ground, which sits just yards away from the icy North Sea on the Angus Coast, and will take in the Lichties’ match against Forfar to kick off the series.

The documentary will be watched by millions when it airs later this year showcasing the club to a massive audience.

Club chairman John Christison said it had been a “lucky few years” for the team, after hosting televised matches against Rangers and Celtic in league and cup competitions respectively.

“We are renowned for our hospitality and friendliness and that came across in the previous programme we featured in with BT Sport,” he said.

“The games against Celtic and Rangers have been great for our profile too and I’m very happy that we will be on a programme that will be shown throughout Europe,” he added.

Though it is a small ground in comparison to some of Britain’s top-flight stadiums, Gayfield is fabled in football history for its proximity to the sea and the distinctive weather that brings.

The Courier recently ran a week-long series on Life with the Lichties, which gave a unique insight into the inner workings of the club, from the cleaning staff to the first team manager.
