A pensioner’s family say they have serious concerns about the conditions he is being kept in at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.
They have spoken out about alleged blood and urine-soaked bedding, dirty floors, lack of care for his personal hygiene and poor diet.
And they are now making an official complaint to NHS Tayside.
Carol Kilburn, 52, said she was worried about the care given to her father, Peter Kilburn, 83, who is receiving treatment for a range of serious illnesses having been taken to Ninewells by ambulance on Saturday.
She said: “When he was admitted we were very worried about my dad’s condition. Initially we were really pleased with his care at the hospital. The staff in the first ward he was in were brilliant.”
However, Mr Kilburn, from Dundee, was then moved to a different ward.
Carol said: “Dad is wearing a catheter and it has been left to us to mop up blood and other fluids that leaked from the tube.
“It spilled on to the floor around his bed and chair and we have had to try to clean it up with paper towels ourselves. Someone even refused to clean up contents of the catheter that had leaked on to his bedding.”
Carol said the family had also had to wash Mr Kilburn because he was upset he had not been kept clean.
“We washed dad down and applied moisturising cream to his arms and legs which were very painful and dry.
“Dad is also having to sit on a stained towel that is on his bedside chair and has not been changed.”
She added: “Because he has broken his glasses he can’t read the menu properly so he has just been selecting porridge and soup, which isn’t enough for him.
“We have been told dad could be in the hospital for up to another two weeks. If things don’t improve we would rather take him home than leave him in hospital.”
A spokeswoman for NHS Tayside said she was not able to discuss the circumstances surrounding an individual patient due to confidentiality.
