Call for bin collections to be cut to once a month across Scotland as trial continues in Fife

Bin collections across Scotland could be cut to once a month following a controversial pilot in Fife, campaigners claim.

Friends of the Earth Scotland say Fife Council’s trial which has seen landfill bins emptied just once every four weeks is likely to be replicated elsewhere if it manages to boost recycling rates.

Around 4,000 homes in the Glenrothes area are currently half way through the first month of a nine-month test also includes increased collections of cans and plastics.

So far there has been a mixed response to the controversial measure, but the eyes of local authority chiefs across Scotland and indeed the entire UK are on Fife to see what rewards can be reaped.

Dr Richard Dixon, Friends of the Earth Scotland director, said: “If it proves to be a success then other councils across Scotland may well want to follow suit.”
