St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright has seen enough of trialists Sanel Jahic and Martin Woods to set the ball rolling with a view to making a double signing.
The Bosnian international centre-back and the former Leeds and Doncaster Rovers midfielder both impressed in their first two days’ training with the Perth squad.
Wright met with chairman Steve Brown to discuss their next move, and the McDiarmid boss is keen to enlist the pair.
He explained: “We’ll make a decision on them later in the week but they’ve both done well. We’re low in numbers rather than quality so I want to bring them in.”
“I’ll have to speak to the chairman about that but they would both add something to the squad. They come with a great pedigree so whether I’ll get both of them we’ll have to wait and see, but I have been really impressed.
“Martin has played at a good level, he’s had back luck with injuries but he’s a very good player.
“Sanel has played 20-odd times for Bosnia and has played in the Champions League. The economics in the game mean we have a chance to get guys like that as you have agents on every day because there are so many guys still without clubs.
“I’ll look at them both in training for the next few days and then make a final decision.”
The former clubs of Jahic, 31, include AEK Athens and APOEL Nicosia, the latter of whom he represented in the Champions League.
Woods, 27, has been without a club since leaving Doncaster in the summer, and has since trained with Bristol City and Chesterfield. He was capped by Scotland at under-21 level after starting his career at Leeds.
Meanwhile, Wright insisted it’s a case of if rather than when star striker Stevie May signs his new deal with Saints.
He revealed there is “only one thing needing tidied up” before May puts pen to paper.
Wright reported: “A deal with Stevie is very close, I’m not panicking about it. He wants to stay and we want him, so it will happen. Stevie has told us he’s agreed with what we’ve mapped out for him over the next couple of years.
“He wants to stay at the club because he’s got a lot of developing to do as a player.
“I’ve found the conversations we’ve had with him and his agent very refreshing. There’s one little thing to be tidied up in the contract but that’s it.
“Everything has been done amicably, and both Stevie and his agent believe the best thing for him is to stay at St Johnstone.”
