Dundee’s wait to find out if it will be crowned the UK City of Culture 2017 will be over in a matter of hours.
Early on Wednesday morning the decision over whether the city has been able to see off competition from Swansea Bay, Hull and Leicester to take the title will be announced.
After a positive bid launch in current host city Derry/Londonderry last week, the Dundee team will be quietly confident but the bookies still have them as outsiders.
The announcement will be made by the UK Government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), but one member of the Westminster cabinet throwing his weight behind the bid is Alistair Carmichael.
The Secretary of State for Scotland has sent his best wishes ahead of the title being handed out following a visit to Dundee last month. He met the bid team to hear about the case it presented last week.Suggested download: Dundee 2017 The Tipping Point (PDF)Mr Carmichael said: “I send my best wishes to Dundee ahead of Wednesday’s decision. I am right behind the bid team and the people of this great city in the efforts they have made so far.
“A phenomenal amount of work has gone in to getting to this point and the waiting is now almost over. Becoming the 2017 UK City of Culture would be a massive boost to the already outstanding programme of work being undertaken throughout Dundee.”
