A Broughty Ferry publican has been left shocked after his pub became electrified.
The Old Anchor Inn on Gray Street became an electrical minefield after a technical problem sent an electrical current through the pub.
It is believed an earth cable had become damaged, causing current to flow through all the metal conductors in the inn.
Five members of staff suffered electric shocks and the pub was forced to close while the problem was resolved.
“The whole pub went live,” said Jeff Stewart Jr of the Old Anchor Inn. “There was electrical current running through everything metal. Touch almost anything and you would get a shock.”
Customers and staff had to leave the premises.
The “very dangerous” situation was only resolved after Mr Stewart managed to contact friends at DBS Electrical and YESSS Electrical, who were able to resolve the problem.
“I’ve got a few friends who are electricians, and luckily they were able to come in on Sunday morning and fix the problem,” he said.
“YESSS Electrical opened up their warehouse especially to help with supplies.”
The pub has now been made safe and has reopened.
Darren Scott, who works at DBS Electrical and who helped fix the problem with his brother Barry, said: “It was a very dangerous situation because there was current running through all the metal in the pub, leaving a real danger of shocks.
“The earth cable that stops this from happening had somehow become damaged and was left ineffective, so we replaced it with a new incoming earth cable.”
However, Mr Stewart was still forced to close the pub from around 2pm on Saturday until 4pm on Sunday, losing out on a big afternoon and evening of business.
He estimates that he lost a substantial amount of money due to the closure.
Mystery still surrounds what caused the earth cable in the Anchor to become damaged.
