Aberdeenshire Council has been forced to burn off road markings after causing confusion in Stonehaven.

The arrows in Stonehaven were removed after it emerged they were advising drivers to go in opposite directions within the town’s Market Square car park.

The local authority repainted the arrows last week, only to discover they were wrong.

Images emerged on social media showing the error, with the photos being shared on more than 200 occasions.

Resident David Fleming, who is chairman of Stonehaven Town Partnership, said the error has caused laughter in the community.

He said: “It’s a very small point, but it’s caused a great stir in Stonehaven and it’s been much talked about.”

An Aberdeenshire Council spokeswoman said: “There is work planned for the renewal of parking bay lines, disabled bays, keep clear text and hatching, and the installation of one new electric vehicle charging bay at Market Square Car Park, Stonehaven. The planned works does not include the renewal of the arrows.

“When directional arrows were clearly marked it led to traffic travelling at speed assuming (correctly) that they were travelling in the correct direction.

“However, it is the nature of this car park, with two entrances that drivers will look around for a space and drive to it by the quickest and easiest route.

“This was not always the signed route.”
