Teen jailed for brandishing meat cleaver in Inverkeithing

A teenager who brandished a meat cleaver in one hand and an eight-inch kitchen knife in the other, making threats in an Inverkeithing street has received an 18-month custodial sentence.

Martin McIntyre, 19, a prisoner at Polmont, admitted that on January 1 at Spittalfield Crescent, Inverkeithing, without reasonable excuse or lawful authority he was in possession of a meat cleaver and a kitchen knife.

He also admitted on the same day behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by acting aggressively and uttering threats, when he appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court yesterday.

Depute fiscal Nicola Henderson said McIntyre had been in a relationship with a girl for four weeks before the incident.

They had been at a party but she had left and sent him a text message later saying the relationship was over.

At this point, McIntyre started crying then went into the kitchen and took a meat cleaver and knife saying: “I’m going to finish this once and for all.”

He went into the garden of a nearby house, where a resident saw him walking towards them armed with knives.

When a resident of the property arrived home, McIntyre threatened to stab him.

Police were called and officers found McIntyre with a knife in one hand and the meat cleaver in the other, pacing back and forwards.

At one point he held the knife and cleaver against his own throat.

Ms Henderson said eventually the weapons were thrown to the ground and then McIntyre collapsed, apparently suffering a seizure.

He had to be taken to hospital as officers recovered the knife with an eight-inch blade and the meat cleaver with a 10-inch blade.

Sheriff Craig McSherry jailed McIntyre for 18 months backdated to January 3.

There will also be a nine-month supervised release order after he serves his term.
