A brave young cancer patient will this weekend hold a fundraiser in Ladybank to thank the Royal Hospital for Sick Children.
Although she is just five years old, Holly Elder has already gone through two years of chemotherapy for a brain tumour and has been cared for by staff at the Edinburgh hospital.
She has already raised £1,000 for the hospital’s cancer ward and her mother, Vicky Donald, hopes as many people as possible will turn up to charity events that are to be held in the village on Saturday and Sunday.
There will be a family fun day on Saturday at Ladybank Youth Club, including pony rides, appearances by Peppa Pig and Buzz Lightyear, family portraits, stalls and face painting from 12.30pm to 4pm.
The next day there will be a Zumba event at the Masonic Lodge in Ladybank from 11.30am to 2.30pm. Ms Donald said the family is very grateful to all who had helped Holly get through her treatment.
“We’d like to thank everybody for their help and I hope lots of people show up on Saturday and Sunday to show their support for the cause because the work they do in ward two, you couldn’t put it into words.
“Holly has been undergoing chemotherapy for the last two years and has her last chemo session on Thursday. We couldn’t be more proud of her.”
Holly, who is a primary one pupil at Ladybank Primary School, was born with a rare genetic disorder called neurofibromatosis type one, which can cause tumours to grow on nerve tissue. When she was three years old, she was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
Ms Donald added: “We’re really thankful to friends and family who have helped us.
“Holly also wanted to say thank you to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, who got in touch with her and are sending her to Disneyland Paris in June.
“She really deserves it because she’s been through two years of utter hell.”
