The vehicle was clearing Atholl Street when it broke down and caught fire just after 8am, sending plumes of black smoke into the sky. Firefighters were scrambled to the scene and managed to extinguish the engine fire, although the vehicle was left extensively damage. A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and rescue Service said: “We attended a fire in a small council road sweeper on Athol Street at 8.13am. “An appliance from Perth attended and one firefighter using breathing apparatus and a hose reel extinguished the fire.” The service also confirmed the driver had got out and was uninjured. The fire caused delays for commuters coming into Perth. Drivers said at the height of the fire black smoke could be seen as far away as Scone.
