An exhibition has opened giving an insight into the 800-year history of an ancient Angus fishing community.
The East Haven Maritime and Heritage Exhibition will run for a week after being opened by Councillor Ewan Smith on Saturday in Carnoustie Library.
East Haven is one of the earliest recorded fishing communities in Scotland, dating back to 1214, and this year celebrates its octocentenery.
Mr Smith said: “East Haven is a small community but it is a very proud one and the current residents are doing an incredible job of celebrating its illustrious history.
“The exhibition is just one of a number of events they have organised, but it provides a real insight into how East Haven has developed over the past 800 years.
“I’m proud to have met the East Haven 800 group on several occasions and they are a real credit to themselves.
“Through their energetic hard work and imagination, they are making their village better for residents and the many tourists who pass it on a daily basis on the cycle track.
“They are creating a legacy and we can only hope that in 100 years’ time East Haven 900 will have the same drive and energy to mark one of the jewels in Angus’ crown.”
Wendy Murray, who is the lead on East Haven 800, paid tribute to resident Sandra Wright who has spent much of her spare time over the last six months researching the history of the community.
The exhibition brings together hard-to-find information and artefacts from public and private collections. It is the first time that much of this material has been displayed in public and certainly the first time it has all been brought together in the same place at the same time.
Also on display is a stunning work of Heritage Bunting, the result of a large community project led by residents Dareena Scott, Ann Ramsay and Stella Edward.
This project has brought together people from all over the UK in creating a visual art display depicting something about their connection with East Haven.
Each of the 122 panels tells the story of East Haven from 1214 right through to the present day and captures everything that people love and remember about the village. There will be further opportunities to view the Heritage Bunting during the summer.
The East Haven 800 steering group have embarked on a number of projects to commemorate and celebrate the octocentenery.
