A Monifieth girl who has battled with meningitis and arthritis all of her life has recorded a pop single with her friends.
Caragh Benson, 9, was born with undetected kidney problems which led to a diagnosis of bacterial meningitis when she was only six weeks old.
After 16 months she was found to have a severe form of juvenile arthritis and last year was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome a condition which limits her kidneys’ ability to function.
The youngster has been in and out of hospital constantly over the years which causes her to miss a lot of school and spend a lot of time away from her friends.
She gets tired very easily and is treated with drugs every day.
But despite her constant struggle, she maintains a positive outlook on life and was recently given the full popstar treatment along with four of her closest friends as they travelled to Glasgow to record a single.
Mum Lynsey Benson, 37, joined the girls on their limo ride from Monifieth to Glasgow for the wish which was granted by the Starlight Foundation.
She said: “She’s absolutely brilliant and takes everything in her stride. She misses so much school. She goes to so many different clinics for treatment.
“The past year has been really hard for her and her joints and it’s been distressing seeing her in so much pain. She’s having to deal with two horrible illnesses.
“Caragh has, understandably, been feeling a lot more down lately and that’s what prompted us to make a call to give her a bit of sparkle back in her life.
“A lot of kids out there use a wish to go for a trip to Disney but Caragh’s was about feeling good about herself and having her friends around her.
“We want to give Caragh as normal a life as possible and try to put a positive slant on everything that happens.
“It was fantastic and emotional to see Caragh laughing and smiling for the whole day she was so happy to be sharing such an amazing experience with her friends.”
The five girls, who called their band Girlz Rule, recorded two songs on the day Taylor Swift’s We Are Never Getting Back Together and Little Mix’s Black Magic.
Caragh was joined by school friends Lucy Reid, Niamh Kingston, Charlotte Bisset and Amy Elder.
She said: “It was so much fun to be a pop star for the day and to feel so good about myself.”
