Plans to build “a place that people will aspire to live in” on the site of a former Angus open prison have been revealed.
A master plan for 40 homes on the site of Noranside has been lodged with Angus Council.
Proposals for the estate, north of Forfar and west of Brechin, include plans to build 35 new homes and five affordable properties across three plots of land on the site.
The former prison was closed in October 2011 and the land has been maintained by land owner Martin Gilbert in the meantime.
A report submitted to the council from William Lippe Architects states: “The aims and objectives set out at the start of this master plan boil down to a determination to deliver a new development that works with the landscape, environment and Noranside itself.
“It is to deliver a place that people will aspire to live in, one to be proud of and one that works.”
The public were given an opportunity to view the proposals earlier this year at Memus Community Hall. More than 50 people attended and the report stated that the proposals were “largely welcomed”.
However, the site will have to undergo substantial refurbishment, restoration and demolition work before construction of the new houses can begin.
