Pupils at a Perth school have planted a tree in memory of a classmate who died suddenly last year. Kayla Brown died of an undiagnosed heart condition in October. Just minutes earlier she had been happily discussing Halloween plans with her family. She was rushed to Perth Royal Infirmary by ambulance from her home in Stanley and died in hospital. The 17-year-old was a sixth-year pupil at Perth Grammar and this week pupils planted a red apple tree in the school grounds. Barry Millar, Perth Grammar School’s head teacher, said: “I met with Kayla’s friends to decide how to remember her. “They came up with the idea of planting a red apple tree because Kayla’s favourite colour was red and she was addicted to red apples. “The tree was very kindly donated by Dobbies.” He said pupils had also taken part in a red-themed non-uniform day to raise money for Cardiac Risk in the Young (Cry). So far the school, in conjunction with St John’s, has raised more than £3,500 for the charity. Mr Millar said the school also plans to dedicate a trophy for the expressive arts to Kayla’s memory.
