More than 600 people have signed a petition calling for major improvements at a busy Fife road junction.
Councillor Bill Brown has said that backers are “amazed” there have been no fatal accidents on the B921 Kinglassie road, where it joins with the B922 Glenrothes to Cluny road.
Having established an online petition, supplemented with physical copies throughout Glenrothes and Kinglassie, a total of 619 people have backed Mr Brown’s calls for improvements at the junction.
“The B922 is a really busy road with hundreds of people using it every day to travel between Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes,” said Mr Brown.
“The junction near Kinglassie often has 10-30 vehicles waiting to emerge from the junction where people take chances to get out from the junction.
“My real concern is drivers taking risks, especially when there is a queue of traffic waiting behind them.
“There seems to be pressure on drivers to get out of the junction.
“People in Kinglassie have wanted something done about the junction for many years.
“Over the last few years it has become much more dangerous with near misses occurring every day.
“Everyone I have spoken to are amazed that we have not had lots of serious accidents with fatalities.”
The route, used by thousands of vehicles every day, is the secondary link between Glenrothes and Kirkcaldy.
However, the current T-junction leads to long delays at peak times and tempts many drivers to gamble when trying to join the B921.
Mr Brown has called for lighting columns to be placed at the junction to improve visibility in winter.
He has also called on Fife Council to examine the possibility of installing a roundabout or traffic lights at the junction.
“The junction needs street lights so that drivers can see in the dark or half dark and electricity lines are already at the junction,” he added.
“In addition to that we need traffic lights and/or a roundabout to slow traffic down and to allow traffic to pass through the junction safely.
“I am planning to meet with officers from the council’s transportation department over the next week, to present the petition and to discuss how we can make the junction safe for all drivers and pedestrians.”
