An Angus man has been charged with attacking and robbing a Chinese takeaway worker.
Robbie Kelly appeared in private at Arbroath Sheriff Court on Wednesday over an alleged incident on Bridge Street on Tuesday afternoon.
The 21-year-old, of Waverley Terrace, Arbroath, is charged with assaulting Sui Hon Cheng by following him, approaching him from the rear and striking him on the head.
The charge states the offence was racially aggravated.
It further alleges Kelly struggled with the man, knocked him to the ground, repeatedly punched and kicked him on the head and body, repeatedly demanded money from him and searched through his pockets in an attempt to rob him.
A second charge alleges Kelly broke into a house belonging to a Stephen Kelly on the same date in a bid to steal £400.
The case called in front of Sheriff Peter Paterson with depute fiscal Jill Drummond acting for the Crown and defence agent Billy Rennie representing Kelly.
Kelly made no plea or declaration, was committed for further examination and was remanded in custody.
The matter is expected to call again on Wednesday next week.
