A controversial Dunfermline flats proposal likened to a Victorian prison has been put on hold.
Councillors on west planning committee, who have been recommended to approve the development, delayed a decision until they visit the site.
McCallan Homes Ltd (MHL) has applied for permission for 10 flats in Townhill Road, at the junction with Methven Drive.
Fife Council has been inundated with objections, including from Bellyeoman Community Council and the Local Residents Group (LRG).
Objectors raised concerns about overdevelopment.
They claimed the building would not fit in with the surrounding area.
The community council said: “The submitted documentation from the architects has shown light coloured finishes, then a stone cladding that made the flats look like a Victorian prison.”
In addition, the community council complained about changes made to the design during the consultation period, and described the proposal as a “slightly watered down version” of previous plans for 15 flats.
McCallan Homes Ltd (MHL) responded: “The current proposal is for a significantly smaller development 10 flats instead of 15, 22 bedrooms instead of 42 and over 30% more amenity space per flat.
“It is significantly lower in height than the 2007 proposal and much less imposing, being split between two buildings.
“MHL believes that the proposed development both satisfies the council’s policies and requirements and will enhance the Townhill Road neighbourhood.”
Dunfermline-based JM Planning Services submitted an objection on behalf of the LRG.
Planning consultant John MacCallum said: “The LRG have been frustrated by the applicant’s attempts to modify the proposals along the way in response to the significant body of objections that the applications have attracted, having been allowed by the council to submit a number of amendments to ‘improve’, in the applicant’s opinion, their own proposals.
“By making a number of changes to the application proposals, the applicant has unwittingly acknowledged that the original proposals as submitted were deficient.
“However, the LRG do not agree that there have been any improvements to the original scheme.”
