Kelpies horse sculptures winning new fans in New York

The two 15ft models of Scotland’s Kelpie horse sculptures are winning legions of new fans after being put on display in New York.

The maquettes which toured Scotland last yearto promote construction of the full-size versions at the Helix Parkland in Falkirk have been placed at Bryant Park in the Big Apple.

The US effort is part of the launch of Scotland Week in the city and locals have taken them to their hearts just as happened here.

Dan Biederman, president of Bryant Park Corporation, said: “It is a great pleasure to work with the American Scottish Foundation and the Scottish Government to host these sculptures and the week of special performances around them in Bryant Park. The park is one of the busiest public spaces in the world and a perfect location for showcasing arts and culture.”

The Kelpies were created by Scottish artist Andy Scott.

He said: “The Kelpies began their US tour in summer of 2012 in Chicago, then spent time at Purdue University in Indiana, and it is with great pleasure that I debut them in New York City at Bryant Park. I am honoured to take part in a celebration of Scotland’s innovation and creativity during Scotland Week this April.”

Local TV stations have been covering the story, and the sculptures have been praised on social media.

They will be on display for the next month.
