Dundee housing convener John Alexander has dismissed a call for his resignation over a critical report into the council’s sheltered housing warden service.
Labour housing spokesman Brian Gordon invited Mr Alexander to consider his position over the investigation by the Care Inspectorate.
The report, which is awaiting finalisation but which was leaked to The Courier, graded the service’s care and support, staffing and management and leadership as weak, the second-lowest ranking possible.
A year ago the staffing was found to be adequate and the other categories were graded as good.
Mr Gordon said Mr Alexander’s pledge after the 2013 report that action would be taken to improve the service was worthless, and asked if the convener should stay in office.
Mr Alexander responded: “I would clarify that as far as I am aware, no councillor has had sight of any report, and while this is still the case, it would be inappropriate to comment.
“Once the report is finalised then I’m sure we will all be able to analyse the information and comment appropriately. I think that it’s quite ridiculous and illogical for Councillor Gordon to ask me to consider my position.
“I’m surprised that an opposition councillor finds it appropriate to make such unqualified statements surely it’s sensible to at least wait on the information/report before making a judgment.”
He added: “If there are any recommendations in relation to any element of the service provided by the council, we will always ensure that appropriate action is taken.
“In every area of our work we aim to continually improve the service, and I know that the department is committed to working with tenants to provide the quality that they expect.”
