A Dundee man has been left heartbroken after discovering his dog, who is one of his closest friends, has just weeks to live.
He has now decided to treat his beloved Kaya in her final week.
She will be taken to some of the nicest spots around Scotland, be able to eat ice cream and also spend time with her owner, Tom Gracie, from Coldside.
Tom, 33, said Kaya was diagnosed with liver failure last week and there was nothing the vets could do.
In order to treasure the last few weeks he has with her, Tom decided to take her to parks and sites all over the country to let her enjoy her final days.
The eight-year-old cross-breed German Shepherd and akita has already been to the beach at St Andrews and the Hermitage near Dunkeld.
Tom said the news came as “a real blow”, adding: “When I found out it really was devastating, because we are really close.
“She had not been well for a while so I took her to the vet’s, where they ran some tests.
“That’s when they found out she had liver disease. There was nothing they could do.”
Tom said he really wanted to make sure Kaya enjoyed whatever time she had left.
He added: “Providing she’s well enough, I plan to take her all over Scotland to as many places as I can.
“I really have to judge it on how well she is on the day but I just want to make sure she can do what she wants and make sure she’s happy, so whatever time we have left together, we make the most of it.”
Tom, who said he has suffered from mental health issues, said Kaya had helped him to cope.
“She has provided me with the company and she makes me get up and out every day, something which has been so important.
“I’m still not great at times and she’s able to provide me with the support that I need.
“It’s something that people who have never had a dog won’t really understand and probably what I’m going to struggle with the most.”
He added: “My friends and family have been very supportive since we discovered the news.
“Everyone knows how close we are and how she has been able to help me with my own health problems.
“I think that’s why I’ve had so many of my friends and family on the phone asking to see her and to get a photo for Instagram. It means that if anyone goes on to look at the pictures they can see how much she was loved.”
