Dundee should become home to Scotland’s film industry, the Scottish Parliament has been told.
In a major debate on the economic impact of the film, television and video games industries in Scotland, SNP MSP Christian Allard said it was the perfect location for the Scottish film studios.
He urged the Scottish film delivery group to make that choice as the economy, energy and tourism committee met at Holyrood.
Mr Allard, who represents the North East, took the opportunity to urge the people of Dundee to get involved and back the creative city that gave birth to “Bob Servant and Desperate Dan”.
He told colleagues that the film, television and video games industry in Dundee has a track record of success such as Aberdonian film director and producer Jon Baird and the global hit computer puzzle game Lemmings.
“These are examples of why Dundee is the perfect central location for this industry, not only because of its fantastic location but the creativity of the people of Dundee and their skill to encourage others to live and work in the city,” Mr Allard said.
During the same debate, the Scottish Government insisted it is still in talks to create a national film studio, despite criticism over a lack of progress on the project.
Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said the proposal was being “actively pursued”, though she was unable to identify a proposed site or operator.
