Dundee United’s Michal Szromnik to welcome competition from Eiji Kawashima

Dundee United goalkeeper Michal Szromnik insists he will happily welcome Japanese international Eiji Kawashima to Tannadice.

The Tangerines still await a work permit for Kawashima and that means Szromnik will keep his place in the team to face Aberdeen at Pittodrie today.

However, when it is all rubber-stamped it is expected that the experienced 32-year-old will be handed the gloves.

Nevertheless, Szromnik said: “The club want to bring in another goalkeeper and that is something I welcome.

“I am ready for a challenge. I’m ready for a fight to play.

“That is the situation when you are a goalkeeper because only one person can play in goal.

“I was ready before the season started and I am ready for it now.

“I didn’t start the season playing matches but I always believed my chance would come.

“I know I’m strong enough to keep my place.

“I think it’s good to have competition. I am still 22 and my experience is just some games back home in Poland.

“Maybe I can learn something from him and perhaps he will learn something from me.”

Szromnik’s display was the one shining light for United as they were hammered 3-0 by Hibs in the League Cup quarter-final at Easter Road in midweek.

With the home team seemingly able to shoot at will, the young Pole did well to keep out as many strikes as he did.

However, any pride he took from his own performance was overshadowed by the result.

He said: “I thought my performance on Wednesday was quite good but I would have preferred that the team won.

“We wanted to get to the next round so I feel bad that we didn’t.

“My performance didn’t really matter because we didn’t get through.”
