If this game was his job interview, then East Fife caretaker boss Gary Naysmith will surely now be handed the Bayview hotseat.
Naysmith has made no secret of his desire to take the job on a permanent basis and did his argument no harm with this win.
The fact that the game’s winning goal came from on-loan Gary Fisher, a player who Naysmith brought in during the week, will only strengthen his case further.
Naysmith said things could not really have gone much better.
He said: “I thought we started a wee bit nervously but we grew into the game and the players grew into the game.
“We got the goal and I thought Liam Buchanan and Gary Fisher linked up particularly well for it.
“We dominated the second half and until the last 10 minutes when they threw on an extra striker.
“It was backs to the wall but what people forget is the players have only won three games in 17 and their confidence is low so it’s only natural that they’ll be a bit nervy.
“But in terms of their effort, commitment and desire the things I wanted we showed it.”
Buchanan and Pat Clarke had tested Chris Smith in the Stenny goal before East Fife grabbed the lead.
A neat one-two between Fisher and Buchanan on the edge of the box saw Fisher given a sight of goal and he made no mistake from close range.
It took the goal to wake Stenny from their slumber and Joe Mbu had to be on his toes to clear a dangerous Sean Dickson cross.
John Gemmell, who was largely snuffed out by Mbu and debutant James Thomson, saw a header saved by Greg Paterson.
Clarke was unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet when his effort was spilled by Chris Smith.
Luckily for the goalkeeper, though, the ball dropped wide of the post.
Jonny Stewart also passed up a late chance for the Fifers while at the other end the visitors’ series of corners came to nothing.
