After 25 years of trading, the B&Q superstore at Kingsway East closed for the final time on Saturday night.
The closure puts up to 20 jobs at risk, and staff described the events as a “very emotional day”.
Robert Dingwall, a member of staff at the store, said: “It’s emotional, and a very sad day.
“It’s a great shop, great people so much so that we have some ex-employees coming down to see the doors close for the last time.”
Four of the store’s team had been there since it opened in 1990, and Mr Dingwall said the firm had done its best to find new posts elsewhere for staff.
B&Q still has a store in the city on Kings Cross Road, just off the Kingsway West.
Site owners Threadneedle Investments signalled their intention to replace the Kingsway East B&Q as far back as 2011, it is understood.
It had been marketing the site for months in a bid to introduce food sales but required an appeal to the Scottish Government to secure permission for B&M to offer its full range of goods.
Neighbouring interiors retailer Harry Corry is displaying signs indicating an ‘end of lease’ sale, and staff say they are unsure if the store will close.
The company has been in negotiations with the same landlords over its continued presence on the Kingsway East retail park.
In recent weeks the store has been running down its stock but a spokesman for the firm said talks were ongoing, with the chain keen to stay.
