East Neuk villagers who feared they would lose their post office are instead to see the “vital” service extended.
There were worries that when St Monans postmaster Peter Marr retired, the branch would close.
However, the Post Office intends to shift it into the village’s Spar shop, where its products and services will be offered seven days a week.
St Monans and Abercrombie Community Council chairman Andy Anderson said: “We are sure that many residents will welcome the extended operating hours this opportunity will offer.
“This proposal will not only secure the provision of services that are vital to many of the local community but will also hopefully help support a local business in the face of increasing competition from the large supermarket operators.”
Mr Anderson also thanked Mr Marr for his many years of friendly service and said he would be greatly missed.
The Post Office said the planned flit from West Shore to the West Street shop would create a modern, open-plan branch, operating 93 hours a week.
Rather than from behind a separate screened counter, Post Office products and services will be offered at the retail counter throughout shop opening hours.
The proposed move is part of a modernisation programme across the Post Office network, designed to improve access for customers
Suzanne Richardson, Post Office regional manager, said: “We understand how important having a post office is to residents in St Monans and we are confident that this new modern service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.”
A six-week public consultation has been launched by the Post Office. The community council is to respond following its next public meeting in the Mayview Hotel on March 16 at 7.30pm.
Mr Anderson urged people to take part in the consultation directly, or make their views known to community councillors.
