Bangkok’s most alluring Lady Boys certainly know how to put on a show as opening night in the newly erected pavilion at Baxter Park proved.
Captivating? Definitely.
Talented? No doubt.
Confusing? Probably. But the Lady Boys make no pretence about their fakery.
Even their lip syncing, while impressively done, isn’t supposed to trick anyone but then that isn’t really the point.
The Lady Boys’ unique cabaret-style performance features a mixture of popular beats, dancing and comedy antics.
With more than 400 flamboyant outfits worn in just over an hour of stage time there is certainly a lot going on.
The all-male Thai national cast did an outstanding job impersonating stars like Rihanna, Katy Perry, Pitbull, Tina Turner, and so, so many more, with style and in some cases grace.
The light-hearted banter included references to popular UK soap operas, a whirlwind adaptation of the Sound of Music and even a stunning performance of Let It Go from Disney’s Frozen.
The intimate experience proved a little nerve-racking for some of the men in the audience, who were plucked from the crowd to take centre stage in some of the numbers.
But as the night went on inhibitions were lost.
By the end of the show most of the audience were on their feet, dancing, singing and clapping along to the tunes.
A special Scottish finale was marred by a few technical problems to begin with but the Lady Boys proved they could Highland Fling as well (and probably better) than any Scot.
Add into the sensory mix a variety of fine Thai cuisine, cooked up by a professional Thai chef, and you have a truly unforgettable evening.
All in all a fantastic evening, and one you won’t stop talking about for a while.
The Lady Boys are in Dundee until Saturday July 11. For ticket information visit www.dundeebox.co.uk.
