Airdrieonians 2 Arbroath 0: Linn asks fans to stick with relegated Lichties

Bobby Linn.

Bobby Linn is focused on bouncing back with Arbroath after suffering the first relegation of his career.

The 28-year-old forward was devastated as goals from Caolan McAleer and Liam Coogans sealed a final-day win for Airdrie and sent the Lichties down.

It will be League Two football at Gayfield next season following a bitterly disappointing campaign for Paul Sheerin’s men, who have been rock bottom since the beginning of February.

Linn is looking forward to challenging for promotion at the first time of asking and urged the Arbroath fans to keep the faith.

“Everybody’s feeling low and the dressing room was quiet but we’ve not done enough over the course of this season to stay in the division,” he said.

“It’s not a nice feeling. This is the first time that I’ve been relegated and we will have to learn from it. I’m sure the manager and the boys that will be here next season will be champing at the bit to get going again.

“I think we have some good players in the dressing room. It’s just not worked out this season for whatever reason.

“The fans continued to back us. They are a credit to the club and we must thank them for coming here. Hopefully they will come back again and not lose faith because we will be raring to go.”

A point at New Broomfield would have been enough for Arbroath to get into the play-offs as ninth-placed East Fife were thrashed 4-1 by Ayr United.

Linn says he wasn’t aware of what was happening at Somerset Park and gutted that they couldn’t take advantage of the Methil side slipping up.

He added: “We were just focusing on ourselves. I couldn’t have told you what the score was. I never knew and I don’t know if any of the other boys knew either. Nobody had said anything.”

The Diamonds opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time when on-loan Partick Thistle winger McAleer thumped home from a Keigan Parker corner.

Gary Bollan’s team then made it six wins in eight games when substitute Coogans turned the ball past keeper Scott Morrison from close range.

Lichties player-manager Sheerin is now preparing for a rebuilding job this summer.

He has already set his sights on winning promotion as he looks to retain some of this season’s squad.

He said: “We will want to keep certain players and we hope they will commit and show loyalty to the club as the club has shown loyalty towards them.

“Fingers crossed that happens and they can help right the wrongs of this season.

“It won’t be easy but bouncing straight back has to be the ambition for next season.”
