Telecoms firm applies for temporary mobile phone mast during Commonwealth Games events in Angus

An expected spike in phone calls during the 2014 Commonwealth Games has led a telecoms provider to apply for a temporary mast in Angus.

Planning permission has been requested for a phone mast in Carnoustie, which would be built before the shooting events begin at Barry Buddon.

The pylon would then be taken down after the events.

The 15.5m mast would also mean dishes for O2 and Vodafone and equipment cabinets, with the entire set-up behind a two-metre fence.

Communications firm Telefonica UK is behind the application, which is designed to “provide improved mobile phone coverage before, during and after the Commonwealth Games 2014 shooting events.”

It forecasts “increased demand for mobile coverage” around the time of the shooting events.

The 100 square metre site was described as “open land which is currently being developed as the shooting event location for the Commonwealth Games.”

The MoD range was used for the full-bore rifle contest during the Edinburgh Games in 1986, but all of the shooting events will take place in Carnoustie.

It runs through the Barry Links area to the south of an access road, and is within the Barry Links Special Area of Conservation.

Environmental group the Joint Nature Conservation Committee describes the area as “one of the largest dune systems in eastern Scotland”.

A survey will find out whether any ground-strengthening work would be needed, were the mast to be given the go-ahead.
