Brechin City manager Ray McKinnon was delighted with his side’s 2-0 victory against Morton at Cappielow, which sees City retain fourth in the League One table and keep their play-off hopes on track.
“It’s always very difficult coming down here to play Morton,” he said.
“We knew how tough it would be, particularly after their 4-0 win at Dunfermline last Saturday.
“However, the game unfolded much as we expected it to.
“They had to push forward to try to get three points and we managed to hit them on the counter-attack.
“Over the piece, we created more chances than they did and I felt we deserved to win.
“I told the players that the longer the game went on, the more it would open up, and I was really pleased at the way my players executed the game plan.
“There was a lot at stake for both sides and it’s a massive three points for us so I’m absolutely delighted.”
The opening 45 minutes were evenly contested, with both sides creating opportunities, and the pattern continued after the break.
However, City made the vital breakthrough after 78 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after Bobby Barr had been brought down in the box by Lee Kilday, and Barr then stepped up to blast the spot-kick well behind the reach of Morton keeper Derek Gaston.
Morton then pushed forward in a bid to salvage a point.
But City’s game plan of catching the visitors on the break worked to perfection again with just two minutes remaining, when they won a free-kick at the edge of the Morton penalty area with Aberdeen loan midfielder Jamie Masson stepping up to strike a wonderful right-foot drive into the top corner of the net, giving home keeper Gaston no chance.
