A sheriff told two men they had “disgraceful” criminal records as he jailed them for assaulting another man.
A third attacker, who had played a lesser role in the incident, was placed on a structured deferred sentence.
The trio were appearing for sentence having been convicted by a jury following a trial at Dundee Sheriff Court last month.
Daniel Luigi Ferrara, 21, of Balbeggie Street, was found guilty by a majority of assaulting John Stoddart by repeatedly knocking him to the ground and repeatedly punching and kicking him on the head and body, all to his severe injury.
He was also found guilty by majority of threatening and abusive behaviour, causing fear and alarm and shouting and swearing, and of attempting to pervert the course of justice by running off from police after being arrested.
John Steven Brown, 22, a prisoner at Perth, was found guilty of the assault charge, while on bail, by a majority.
Colin Simpson, 20, then of Balunie Avenue and now living in Arbroath, was found guilty by a majority of assaulting Mr Stoddart by striking him with a bicycle.
Sheriff George Way had remanded all three in custody following the verdicts.
Ferrara’s agent George Donnelly asked the sheriff to consider imposing a community payback order on his client rather than jailing him.
Jim Laverty, representing Brown, made a similar request but admitted: “Mr Brown has been realistic in his discussions with me that custody would be uppermost in your lordship’s mind.”
Sheriff Way told Ferrara and Brown: “You both have disgraceful records for men of your age.”
Brown’s previous offences included assault, a knife crime and four breaches of bail, while Ferrara had convictions for assault and was out on licence when he attacked Mr Stoddart.
The sheriff said there could be “no other proper punishment” than custody as he jailed Ferrara for 23 months and 15 days and Brown for 20 months.
Both were also placed on a one-year supervised release order.
The sheriff placed Simpson on a structured deferred sentence, which will see him return to court on May 22.
