Brazen thieves stole a car from a Dunfermline driveway as its owner was defrosting the windscreen.
The owner had only left his Audi unattended for a moment when it was taken this morning.
Police are hunting three men seen nearby a few hours before and warned motorists against leaving vehicles unattended with engines running.
It is believed that another vehicle with a very loud engine was used in the theft which occurred at around 7am in Dover Park.
Detective Sergeant Karen Muirhead, of Dunfermline Police Station, said: “Our inquiries are at an early stage but we’re very keen to trace three males who were seen nearby in Cowal Place at around 2.30am.
“Criminals by their very nature tend to be opportunistic and I would remind people not to leave their vehicles unattended while attempting to defrost their car windows.
“It may be tempting to start your car and leave the engine running while the windows clear and you continue to get ready inside in the warm but this offers an opportunity for thieves.
“Even for a very short period, please do not leave your vehicle unlocked while preparing for a journey.”
