St Johnstone look set to spurn the advances of another English club who have expressed an interest in striker Stevie May.
Following the rejection of bids from League One outfit Peterborough United in the summer, Rotherham United boss Steve Evans has become the latest manager looking to tempt the in-form 21-year-old south of the border.
Reports on Thursday suggested that Evans has tabled a club record six-figure bid for May, although Saints chairman Steve Brown told Courier Sport that he was “not aware” of any bid from the League One club.
And that assertion was backed up by Saints Tommy Wright, who insisted no cash has been put on the table.
“There has been no bid for Stevie May. I had a conversation with Steve Evans last week but that was it, they’ve not put any offer in,” Wright said.
Sources close to Rotherham say they would be willing to break their transfer record said to be around £160,000 to land the Scotland U21 striker, who has scored 11 goals this season.
However, Saints agreed a fee of around double that with Peterborough but May made it clear he wanted to stay at McDiarmid Park.
The striker also signed a 12-month extension to his deal recently, meaning Saints could command a higher figure for the sought-after star.
As well as May, Rotherham have been linked with Billy McKay of Inverness, Barnsley striker Chris Dagnall and Crawley’s Nicky Adams with Evans keen to find a goal-scorer of May’s repute to strengthen the club’s promotion bid this season.
