Stranraer 1 Brechin City 0: Dods urges players to ‘keep battling away’

Darren Dods remains on the lookout for his first point as Brechin boss after Jamie Longworth ensured Stranraer picked up all three points.

City are still three points adrift of Cowdenbeath at the bottom of League One after the 1-0 defeat.

The manager felt his side were unlucky at times and said: “We are not getting the breaks at the moment but we just need to keep working away, get fit bodies on the pitch, keep going and take it on to Forfar next week.

“It’s an Angus derby so we need to make sure we are up for that one and keep battling away.”

Both teams looked nervy and short of confidence in the opening 45 minutes.

Brechin carved out the first real chance. The home defence was caught out by a long ball over the top but David Weatherston blazed high and wide.

The Blues improved after the break and Longworth capitalised on Darren McCormack’s error to score.

The hosts threatened to double the lead with Longworth, Craig Malcolm and Chris Aitken denied by the impressive Graeme Smith.

Brechin almost snatched an equaliser when Andy Jackson seized on Scott Rumsby’s mistake, but the striker could only smash the ball off David McGurn’s legs before Craig Molloy fired the rebound over the bar.

Dods said: “They put us under pressure and we lost a bad goal.

“We had a wee rally late on and we have not really been having that rally late on.

“You are just hoping we take one of the chances like when Jackson goes through and the keeper makes a save and the rebound is over the bar.

“Graeme Smith keeps us in it with a few good saves and we get a couple of corners in the last few minutes and you are thinking ‘can we nick a point’ but unfortunately it was not to be.”
