Fire service accused of safety breaches over firefighter’s death
ByThe Courier Reporter
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has been accused of health and safety breaches over the death of a firefighter around four years ago.
Ewan Williamson, 35, died as he tackled a blaze in Balmoral Bar in Dalry Road, Edinburgh on July 12 2009.
Mr Williamson was working for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service – now the east division of the new national service – when he died in the line of duty.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service faces three charges under the Health and Safety at Work Act. The case was called at the High Court in Glasgow.
Lord Turnbull adjourned the case until December 6 at the High Court in Edinburgh for legal debate.
Mr Williamson’s death is said to be the only firefighting death in the history of Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service.
