Outrage at ‘appalling’ lighting in Ninewells Hospital car park

Ron Stewart said the car park at Ninewells was so dark he could not see.
Ron Stewart said the car park at Ninewells was so dark he could not see.

Lighting in one of the main car parks at Ninewells Hospital has been branded “appalling”.

Ron Stewart drove there last week to visit his partner and was taken aback by the fact that the area where he parked was not lit.

Mr Stewart says he attempted to track down parking staff to quiz them on the issue but ended up at a wheelchair rental office due to not being able to see where he was going.

When he did complain to car park wardens, the 61-year-old says, he was told that “at least” 10 people a day had reported the situation, but that nothing so far had been done to resolve the problem.

He explained: “My partner was in one of the wards and I was going up to visit her around teatime.

“I parked at one of the hospital’s open-air car parks, next to steps which lead to the main entrance.

“I got out the car and dropped my car keys, but I couldn’t find them because it was so dark. It was completely black.

“I ended up at an office which rents out electric wheelchairs, thinking it was where the parking supervisor was, and the guy inside let me use the phone so I could report the issue.

“The supervisor told me that they had been getting at least 10 complaints every day, but that it was nothing to do with them and was something Ninewells had to deal with.

“I think this is a nonsense. People pay to park their cars and the parking company should be dealing with this.

“A lot of elderly people attend hospital and I could see a number of older people walking up from the car park quite tentatively.

“The area around the parking machine isn’t lit up either. Someone could quite easily come up behind you and take your wallet when you’re trying to pay.

“My place of work would be shut down if we had conditions like this. It’s atrocious.”

A spokesman for Indigo Parking said improvements are under way.

He said: “We are in the process of replacing all the lighting in the MSCP with LED units which are brighter and more energy efficient.

“We are also carrying out a lighting replacement programme for the surface car parks on site.”
