Dancing with a giant bauble, a festive performer gave a sparkling preview of the magic to come at Friday’s Christmas Light Night in Dundee.
A host of singing, dancing and theatrical events will be held across the city, with the main event of Santa, along with Lord Provost Bob Duncan, turning on the Christmas lights taking place at City Square at 6pm.
In preparation for the night of festive spirit, a dancer from the Space at Dundee and Angus College took centre-stage in front of Discovery Point to give a preview performance.
Acting and performance students from the college will also put on an unusual show when they depict an ancient rivalry of angels and devils in the city streets on the night from 7 to 8.30.
Taking part in the event has become a college tradition, with students participating in various guises from Dickensian carol singers in the past to this year’s angels and devils.
Lecturer Ashling Findlay-Carroll said: “The overall theme of the event is ‘wings and things’ and the students were keen to do something playful and mischievous but with an angelic twist.”
A radio roadshow will also travel across the city on Friday afternoon on a Christmas Bus, broadcasting live in the lead-up to the switching on ceremony.
National Express Dundee acting operations manager Kevin Fitzpatrick said: “I hope the Christmas bus will also bring some festive cheer to the local community across the city.”
The company has put on extra buses to make sure as many people as possible can join in the festivities in the city centre.
From dancers to brass bands, the family friendly celebration of Christmas promises something for everyone including late-night shopping, food, walking tours and an ice rink.
The city-centre streets will come alive with activities.
Venues such as the McManus and the City Churches will also see cultural performances by a number of Dundee’s community and school groups, as well as a nativity.
The free event starts at 5.30pm and continues until 9pm when a fireworks finale will light up the sky.
