Raith Rovers 0 Dumbarton 0: McKinnon focuses on good points in game

Ray McKinnon said frustration must not be allowed to snowball.

Raith Rovers boss Ray McKinnon was a frustrated man after watching his team dominate Saturday’s goalless draw with Dumbarton.

Rovers failed to score for the fourth match running and are now clinging on to fourth place in the Championship on goal difference after just one win in 10 league fixtures.

However, McKinnon insists that the goals will come, and urged his players not to let their frustration get the better of them.

“The boys are frustrated and we just need to be careful that it doesn’t snowball,” he said.

“People can start to get nonsense in their head that we’re a team that can create, but can’t score.

“We just need to make sure that doesn’t happen so we’ll focus on the good points in the game.

“Our goalkeeper hasn’t had a save to make and we’ve created chances.

“Soon enough one of them will fall for us.”

Raith handed a debut to Aidan Connolly, who signed for the club on Friday after being released by Dundee United earlier in the week.

The 20-year-old produced an impressive performance, suggesting that he could provide the missing spark in the final third in upcoming games.

Raith dominated possession but struggled to break down the Dumbarton defence throughout the match.

The best opening for the home side in the first half came on 19 minutes as Mark Stewart’s sharp shot on the turn from 12 yards forced goalkeeper Jamie Ewings to save with his legs.

The visitors had few glimpses of goal, but they went close on 25 minutes when Frazer Wright headed a Tom Walsh corner towards goal only for Ross Callachan to head off the line.

Rovers should have ended their goal drought 10 minutes after the break when Connelly laid the ball on a plate for Louis Longridge only for defender Wright to make an amazing double goal-line clearance.

Callachan forced Ewings into a good save from a 30-yard free-kick, while the Dumbarton goalkeeper also saved late on from sub Grant Anderson.

Rovers claimed a last-minute penalty when Stewart was hauled down by Stewart in the box, but referee Stephen Finnie waved away the strong claims.

McKinnon added: “The boys are saying it was a stonewall penalty.

“We’re just not getting the rub of the green right now.

“We need that wee bit of luck and something to break for us, and hopefully it happens sooner rather than later,” he said.
