Getting rid of eyesore bins near Dunfermline Abbey ‘would be a godsend’

Plans have been lodged to try to rid Dunfermline’s historic heart of its eyesore bins.

For years large commercial bins around Kirkgate and Maygate have been stored on the main access route into Dunfermline Abbey in St Catherine’s Wynd.

Fife Council has already tried to solve the problem by creating a secure storage area on a narrow gap site between the City Chambers and Old Inn.

However, an objection about the positioning of the bins after planning permission had been granted scuppered that proposal. Now the local authority has lodged new plans which use the same space.

The change would see the bins now stored on the City Chambers side of the gap site, as opposed to the pub’s side.

Six commercial bins would be housed in a freestanding steel cage on a platform accessed at street level.

Councillor David Mogg said having no bins outside the abbey would be “great stuff” and fellow councillor Joe Rosiejak said the plans “would be a godsend”.
