An Angus community is at odds over a statue of its favourite son.
Plans for a monument honouring former AC/DC frontman Bon Scott, who lived in Kirriemuir as a child, have prompted a debate on whether the likeness should be holding a set of bagpipes instead of a microphone.
While local charity DD8 Music has already commissioned an architect to design the £40,000 figure, organiser Graham Galloway has launched a public consultation to decide what the people want to see in the rock star’s hands.
“We’ve had a few people saying they are unhappy that Bon’s statue features him holding bagpipes,” he said.
“We chose this design as we felt it emphasised Bon’s Scottish roots something he was very proud of.”
An online poll has seen 85% of the town opting for the bagpipes. Opponents have argued Bon was more of “a rocker”, and that bagpipes could confuse future generations.
DD8 supporter Mark Kerr said the project is not meant to portray the minute role of pipe music in AC/DC’s back catalogue but rather, the strong, national roots of its first frontman.
