Dundee United make move for Japanese goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima
ByNeil Robertson
Dundee United boss Mixu Paatelainan is closing in on his first signing in the shape of Japanese international goalie Eiji Kawashima.
The 32-year-old is a free agent after leaving Belgian side Standard Liege in the summer and the Tangerines have applied for a work permit for the player who has been capped 72 times for his country and played in the last two World Cup finals.
However, it is unlikely the permit will arrive in time for Saturday’s crunch league game with Aberdeen.
United have been without an experienced keeper since Rado Cierzniak left the club at the end of last season.
Luis Zwick, who is 21, had been the preferred goalie at the start of this campaign but was replaced by Polish stopper Michal Szromnik for Saturday’s game against Ross County.
The 22-year-old more than played his part in the much-needed victory over the Staggies, keeping a clean sheet.
However, he will now face a battle for the No.1 jersey with Kawashima.
