The first two weeks of the Heineken Cup have merely proved how ridiculously insane it is to even countenance a season without a full European competition.
Intransigence needs to be set aside on both sides. PRL/LNR need to accept that it’s not a proper European competition unless all major nations, whether their pro-teams continue to be run by unions or not, play in it.
The Celtic unions have to accept that the competition has to have meritocratic rather than automatic qualification and that there needs to be a fairer and more equitable distribution of funds.
Those concessions were informally offered to the PRL/LNR some months ago, I am told. So why are they still fighting?
In 30 years in journalism I can’t remember such a succession of disingenuous and plainly inaccurate public statements on one single issueand I used to cover politics.
