A Glenrothes community group is to honour the Queen’s birthday by turning back the clock to when she visited the town.
Members of We R Woodside are to host a “Clean for the Queen”, a community clean-up aiming to return the area to the same splendour as when the monarch visited the neighbourhood 58 years ago.
“The Queen visited Woodside many years ago,” said Susan Mentiplay, from the group.
“We found pictures of it and decided that it would be nice to tie in something with her birthday.
“We are hoping to get as many local people together as possible for the clean-up. The group is still relatively new and we’ve been trying to get it going over the past year.”
It was in June 1958 that the Queen visited Glenrothes then a shining New Town and a showcase for post-war urban design.
Joined by the Duke of Edinburgh, she was greeted by thousands of people who turned out to see the royal couple open the shopping centre on Woodside Way.
Councillor Ian Sloan said initiatives such as the Clean for the Queen was just the start of a year of projects for We R Woodside.
Fife Council is hoping to hear from other communities keen to host similar events for the Queen’s birthday.
To join the Clean for the Queen meet at the Lomond Centre on Saturday March 5 at 10.30am.
