Cowdenbeath manager Jimmy Nicholl was delighted with “three great points” after his team’s win over Alloa courtesy of Kane Hemmings.
He said: “We have kept the same system for the past three games and we are playing well.
“Alloa were the better side at the start of the second half but we got the goal and are happy with the three points a great start to the new year for us”.
Cowdenbeath failed to capitalise on their superior play in the opening minutes, with Alloa’s keeper Scott Bain in fine form as he stopped shots from ex-Alloa star Jamie Stevenson and then again from Jon Robertson.
Alloa fought hard to get back into the match and slightly against the run of play they came close to opening the scoring in the 17th minute when Holmes split the Cowdenbeath defence with a pass to Andy Kirk, whose fierce shot went just past Flynn’s left post.
Cowdenbeath continued to pressure the home defence and in the 27th minute they again came close when Armstrong fired a fierce shot into the Alloa defence.
From the clearance, Milne’s shot went past the post and in the 31st minute Robertson came close but Bain brilliantly turned his shot away.
Alloa started the second half with determination and they had the visitors pinned back.
In the 54th minute Holmes chipped a free kick to the feet of Cawley, who had his shot tipped over the bar by Flynn.
However, the visitors took the lead in the 72nd minute when poor defensive play by Alloa left a goalscoring chance for Hemmings and from 10 yards out, he fired home an unstoppable shot past Bain.
Alloa fought back and in the 77th minute the home fans thought McCord had levelled but the linesman ruled he was offside.
