St Andrews University is the third best in the entire UK while Abertay and Dundee are on the rise, according to new rankings.

And Dundee and Abertay universities are among the fastest-climbing institutions in The Guardian’s rankings, published on Tuesday.

Dundee University rose nine places to 38th, while Abertay rose eight places to 93rd in the table.

The University of Dundee was also ranked as one of the top 10 places in the UK to study medicine, dentistry and maths.

“I am delighted to see Dundee rising in the Guardian tables, which continues a strong run of league table performances for the University,” said Professor Pete Downes, principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Dundee.

“The Guardian rankings strongly reflect levels of student satisfaction, which of course have been high at Dundee.”

Cambridge and Oxford occupy the top two spots.

But St Andrews academic schools performed strongly with four Computer Science, Geography, International Relations and Divinity being ranked top in the UK.

Chemistry, History, Philosophy and Art History all secured second place while Physics, English and Earth and Marine Science were ranked third.

Management, Classics and Mathematics were all ranked in the UK top 5, and Biosciences, Medicine, Modern Languages and Psychology were placed in the top ten.

The Guardian Guide is the third recent major league table in which the University of St Andrews has performed strongly.

Last week the prestigious Leiden Ranking 2015 placed the University 45th in the world in a comprehensive survey of 750 major universities worldwide.

Last month the University was named best in Scotland and 5th in the UK in The Complete University Guide 2016.

St Andrews principal and vice-chancellor Professor Louise Richardson said: “We are all delighted that so many of our Schools have been judged to be the best, or among the best, in the country.

“Success at this level is only possible with a very gifted academic staff, the engagement of the very best students and the support of an unrivalled professional staff. This result reflects a formidable team effort.”
