Bravery awards have been given to an off-duty police officer and member of the public who detained a thief after she stole a purse from an 83-year-old shopper.
Chief Superintendent Garry McEwan presented off-duty police officer DC Dennise Graham and Tony Girdwood with the commendation for their bravery and the assistance they provided to the elderly lady.
The woman was shopping in Kirkcaldy’s Marks and Spencer in October when a woman reached into her handbag and stole her purse.
She shouted for help and DC Dennise Graham and fellow shopper Tony Girdwood went to her aid.
They saw another woman who they suspected had taken the purse and confronted her.
With the help of a member of staff they stopped the woman from leaving the shop and awaited the police.
Officers then arrested a 31-year-old woman from Kirkcaldy and the purse and contents were fully recovered.
Mr McEwan said: “The actions remind us that police officers across Scotland, whether on or off duty, are willing to step forward to ensure the safety and security of our communities.”
