A group of military wives and girlfriends from Tayside are showing their support to the marines by taking part in an arduous 30-mile training exercise.
Becci Parriss from Arbroath, Rachael Smith from Carnoustie and Dundonian Katie Burnett are all fundraising for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund (RMCTF) by testing their endurance on a yomp through the Highlands.
The women whose partners are all based with 45 Commando at RM Condor near Arbroath are aiming to complete the Commando Spirit Survive the Yomp Challenge, based on an exercise designed to test the military’s most elite force.
In and around Spean Bridge on September 12, they will follow in the footsteps of thousands of Royal Marines who trained in the unforgiving terrain to become Commandos and prepare for pivotal roles in the Second World War.
Becci, 28, said: “We are always looking for ways to raise money for the RMCTF.
“It’s going to be hard work but it will be fun since there’s a big group of us doing it and I’m sure we’ll all be egging each other on through ‘Commando Country’.
“I’ve already had a lot of support from family, friends and colleagues, and now I’m hoping the people of Angus will get behind me too and sponsor my efforts to raise a fantastic sum for the charitable trust.”
The group will be encouraged along the route by marines, with each participant raising at least £500 for the charity appeal.
Another brave person from Angus, Peter Carson from Montrose, is also taking part in the challenge.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will push me to the absolute limit,” he said, “but the thought of raising so much money for such a worthwhile cause will give me the willpower to get through.”
Major General Martin Smith, commandant general of the Royal Marines, said: “I wish all participants the very best of luck and extend my gratitude for their tremendous fundraising efforts.”
