St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright has jokily dismissed criticism aimed at him by Rotherham boss Steve Evans.
The verbal volleys have been flying over the border and back after the English club were told £300,000 would be nowhere near enough to buy striker Stevie May.
Evans had contacted the McDiarmid Park club by phone to enquire about possibly getting May, who has also been a target for Peterborough. However, Saints say no formal bid was made by Evans or anyone else at that club.
The Rotherham gaffer then went public to claim that he had been quoted £800,000 for the Scotland under-21 man but, again, that doesn’t square with the Perth club’s version of events.
Evans then added that if St Johnstone are claiming no formal bid was made by him then: “I must have been speaking to a Dutchman.”
Courier Sport understands that even £800,000 would not even be enough to persuade Saints to sell their prize asset.
In a retort aimed at Evans, Wright said: “We know our valuation of Stevie May but no one at St Johnstone has ever gone public with it. It will remain that way.
“That is two clubs from England who have asked about Stevie and painted me as the bad guy.”
As for the Dutchman dig, Wright said: “At least it will look good on my CV that I seem to be bilingual!”
