Lee Croft is backing St Johnstone to take that final step at long last.
Saints have never reached a Scottish Cup showpiece, albeit they have made it to the final of the League Cup twice, losing to Celtic in 1969 and then Rangers in 1998.
The Perth men have a chance to take a significant step towards realising their goal on Saturday when they travel to Stark’s Park to play Raith Rovers in the last eight of the Scottish.
As an Englishman, Croft is steeped in FA Cup folklore instead of the tournament he is now competing in.
Nevertheless, he knows more than enough about the club’s record in Scotland’s premier knockout competition to realise just what it would mean to the Perth club and their supporters to get to Celtic Park on May 17 and lift silverware.
“It would be great for the fans to win the Scottish Cup because the club hasn’t even been to a final of this competition before,” he said.
“As players, this is a chance to put that right and go down in history. It would be wonderful for everyone at St Johnstone because the fans would love a day out.
“But every team left in the competition will be thinking that they can get there. Once you get to the last four it’s anyone’s game so that’s why the quarter-final is so important.
“With Celtic being out, it has opened the competition up but there are still plenty of good teams left. Everyone will think they have a good chance if they can get through this weekend.
“The club has been in a lot of semi-finals in recent years but we’ve not been able to take that step. But first it’s about getting through against Raith and we know that won’t be easy.”
Croft, like the rest of his teammates, paid attention to Raith’s result in the last round a dramatic 3-2 win over Hibs at Easter Road. So there will not be any complacency in the ranks on Saturday.
“They got a great result against Hibs in the last round and that shows how dangerous they are,” he said.
“I’m good friends with Kevin Moon, who plays for Raith, so we know they’re a decent side. They’ve struggled in the league a bit but it’s the cup so they’ll fancy their chances.”
The pain of a 4-0 defeat in the last four of the League Cup at the hands of Aberdeen is still fresh. Croft came close to getting a crucial goal against the Dons and has been pondering what might have been.
However, he added: “The way we went out of the League Cup was really disappointing but we have a chance of getting back to another semi-final now.
“Hopefully we’ll be able to put the Aberdeen defeat to bed. I played the chance through in my head a few times but I’m over it now.
“I put it down to a good save really! If we’d equalised then I think the game would have been very different because we played well.
“But we didn’t and they got us on the counter-attack a few times to score their goals. We played them again at the weekend and did well so there’s nobody in the competition to fear.
“There are some good teams left in it but to think about anything else, we have to get past Raith Rovers first.”
